Carterton shop closure

01 June 2026

We have made the difficult decision to close our Carterton shop. The shop will close on Saturday 27 June. Please read on to find out more.

We wanted to tell you that our Carterton charity shop will be closing on Saturday 27 June.

This has been a hard decision, but as a charity, we must make sure every donation is used in the best possible way to support patients and families. Despite the dedication of our fantastic staff and volunteer team, the shop isn’t making enough money to cover the costs of keeping it open. Closing it is the most responsible decision to protect funding for hospice care in the long term.

We are incredibly grateful to you, our customers and donors, who have supported our Carterton shop over the years. Your support has made a real difference.

We would also like to take this opportunity to reassure you that we continue to remain dedicated to our retail shops and look forward to our exciting expansion projects in Wantage and Kidlington later this year.

FAQs

Why are you closing the Carterton shop?

This has been a very difficult decision. But over the past year, the cost of running the shop has continued to rise. At the same time, the money raised through sales has not been enough to keep the shop going and support hospice care in a meaningful way.

As a charity, we have a responsibility to make sure the money our supporters give us is used in the most effective way possible. Every pound matters. After careful review, we’ve concluded that keeping this shop open would mean spending money that could be better used directly on patient care.

Despite the dedication of our fantastic staff and volunteer team, the shop isn’t making enough money to cover the costs of keeping it open. Closing it is the most responsible decision to protect funding for hospice care in the long term.

Is the hospice struggling financially?

No, the hospice itself remains financially stable.

This decision is about planning carefully for the future and responding responsibly to market changes. We regularly review all parts of our work, including our shops, to make sure they continue to raise as much as possible for patient care.

Where can I donate items now?

We would love to welcome you to our other shops across Oxfordshire. They continue to play a vital role in funding patient care.

If you live in Carterton, your nearest shop is based in Witney, our second largest store.

Please check the Donation Hubbefore donating to our shops.

Why is this the first we are hearing about it?

We understand that this may feel sudden.

We review our shops regularly and look carefully at income, costs and long-term sustainability. Once a final decision was made, our first priority was to speak directly with the shop staff and volunteers. It was important that they heard the news from us personally.

We are now sharing the news publicly so that our community is informed and has time to visit before the shop closes on Saturday 27 June.

What about the staff and volunteers?

We are working closely with our staff and volunteers as part of this transition and are grateful for their continued support. We recognise the important contribution they have made to the shop and to the charity, and we will continue to support them throughout the closure process.

This is the second shop closure announcement this year – are more shops going to close?

We understand people may feel concerned following recent shop closure announcements.

Our charity shops remain a vital part of how we raise funds to support patients and families across our community. As the retail environment continues to evolve, we regularly review our shop portfolio to ensure it remains sustainable, effective, and fit for the current climate.

Any decision to close a shop is made carefully and only after thorough consideration. Importantly, we remain committed to investing in retail and are excited about upcoming expansion projects in Wantage and Kidlington later this year. These developments reflect our focus on building a strong, sustainable retail operation for the future.
