Ann's Story
Shared by Ann’s daughter, Kate.
In early December 2017 my mum Ann was diagnosed with bile duct cancer and lived for just two months following her diagnosis. By January 2018 she was really poorly and was admitted into the John Radcliffe Hospital. She went downhill so quickly and, luckily, she could be moved to Sobell House on the Thursday night when a bed became available. Mum passed away on the Monday morning with me, my brother and my sister all by her side.
Although mum was only at Sobell House for four short days, the care we received was amazing and something I will always be grateful for. Everyone there – from the nurses to the tea lady – made us feel so welcome and comforted at such an awful time. The chaplain was really caring, and we even spent some time in the beautiful chapel to have a moment to ourselves.
We couldn’t believe how calm the hospice was – it felt like a very special place to spend time in for mum’s final days. The kitchen was warm and cosy where we could have some respite and have a coffee and biscuit. Mum even thought she was in a private hospital and kept asking how much she owed as it was so nice!

I just cannot thank the staff enough for all of their kindness to my mum – when she was scared, they would comfort her, and held her hand when we weren’t there.
The care continued and I received bereavement counselling for six weeks every Wednesday night – this was so helpful and allowed me to talk about my mum and how I was feeling. It’s such a kind thing Sobell House do to support people who have gone through losing someone so close to them.
I will always support Sobell House as much as I can. I’ve taken part in the charity’s annual Winter Walk at Blenheim Palace a few times now with my dog Luna, which is always lovely. I will be forever grateful to the people who looked after us and made us feel at home. Sobell House is an amazing place.
Thank you so much to Kate for kindly sharing her family’s experience of Sobell House.
