Mark’s Story
As told by Mark’s daughter, Hayley.
My Dad, Mark Kirby, was in Sobell House from 21st to 25th February 2026. It was his wish to spend the end of his life there, and to be able to have an ice lolly in the garden or conservatory with his older grandchildren, as well as share precious cuddles with his newborn granddaughter.
The staff at Sobell supported him with such care and determination to make sure this wish come true. On 22nd February, Dad spent an hour with us in the conservatory. It was an incredibly special moment, and a memory we will treasure forever. My children also loved going along the corridor in the toy car, and Dad really enjoyed watching them. It brought a sense of fun and normality, making the Hospice feel so much more homely.
Dad also had one final wish – to see the family dog, Jake, before he died. At one point, we thought we had left it too late, as he closed his eyes after sitting in the conservatory and did not open them again. However, on 25th February, we decided to arrange it anyway, as we hadn’t yet fulfilled this wish. A friend brought Jake in, and we lifted him onto the bed. Jake gave Dad a gentle kiss on the face and then kissed his hand and arm. We knew Dad was aware Jake was there, as he slightly raised his hand for my Mum to place on Jake’s back. Dad passed away a few hours after this.

We are truly grateful to the staff at Sobell for everything they did for us in such a short space of time. Real life angels work there, including Rejoice, Fiona, Jo, Michelle, and Jessie. Their kindness and compassion made an immeasurable difference to our family.
