Living Well Volunteer

10:00-13:00 | Mon-Thurs

Our Living Well Service supports those living with a life-limiting illness to improve their wellbeing and manage their symptoms more effectively. The programme we offer empowers people to live well, by equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to achieve their goals and to live life with purpose.

Skills required

  • Pleasant, friendly disposition
  • Mature and confident

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to liaise between staff and patients
  • Reliable
  • Ability to deal with challenging situations should they arise
  • Ability to empathise with others
  • Can work effectively as part of a team

Volunteering duties

  • Attend handover meetings with staff
  • Assist day centre staff when asked and when appropriate offer to assist
  • Greet patients and visitors as they arrive
  • Provide emotional support, sit and talk with patients
  • Undertake activities with patients e.g. crafts, jigsaws, quiz
  • Hand massage if trained and as required
  • Assist patients in moving around the Day Service and/or hospice if trained and it is required
  • Make and serve drinks to patients
  • Prepare the dining area for lunch which begins at 12:00
  • Serve food to patients and clear away.  Allow patients time to enjoy their meal and socialise at the table
  • Put all dishes in dishwasher and empty dishwasher
  • Wash up as necessary and keep the kitchen tidy. At the end of the day ensure the dishwasher is empty and ready for the following day


  • Fire safety – on induction and annually thereafter
  • Safeguarding adults – on induction and 3 yearly thereafter
  • Online training (approximately 7 hours)

Other specific training may be offered for specific roles where appropriate.
