Ward Assistant

Volunteering duties

  • Meet and greet family, patients and clinical professionals
  • Deal with general enquiries
  • Signposting – refer patients and visitors to appropriate staff or services when asked
  • Prepare and distribute mealtime trays to patients
  • Maintain patients’ areas – check bedtables are clean and positioned for patients to reach their food and drink
  • Assist serving food to patients and clearing away
  • Be aware if patients need help to eat and drink and tell staff if you are happy to help them (upon completion of speech and language therapy training)
  • Provide emotional support – sit and talk with patients
  • Be vigilant of patient anxiety or restlessness
  • Be vigilant of and respond to patient ‘buzzer’
  • Help make visitors feel welcome, meet and greet, escort them around the ward

Training provided

  • Sage and Thyme – date arranged on appointment
  • Dementia Friends (information pack will be provided)
  • Fire safety – on induction and annually thereafter
  • Safeguarding adults – on induction and three yearly thereafter
  • Handwashing/infection control – on induction
  • Speech and language therapy (training on feeding and thickened liquids) – date arranged on appointment

Ward Assistants volunteer in shifts Monday-Sunday.

First shift: 11:30-15:30 | Second shift: 15:30-19:30

Please note this role requires an enhanced DBS clearance and OUH Health Check. Successful candidates must agree to abide by Sobell House policies and procedures, code of practice and sign a volunteer agreement. Full training and induction will be provided.
