The Local Hospice Lottery contributes around £200,000 a year towards Sobell House’s work, which makes a big difference to our ability to provide care to our patients and their loved ones. We’re very grateful to all our players and hope you choose to join them!
It costs just £1 a week to play and not only do you have a great chance of winning, but you’re making a big difference too.
How your support makes a difference
Every year, the lottery raises enough money to fund 8,000 hours of creative therapies, such as music and art therapy.
Creative therapies provide our patients with a safe space to talk about their thoughts and feelings at an overwhelming time, and can even be used to provide special keepsakes for loved ones. Some of our patients have used their time to create albums, Desert Island Discs, and paintings.
Mark worked alongside Tom, our music therapist, to create storybooks for his two-year-old son, and kindly shared his experience in this video.
Hear from a winner
In August 2020, Terry from Oxford was the lucky winner of £16,000, as a result of playing the Local Hospice Lottery in support of Sobell House. He talked to us about his win:
I first started supporting Sobell House by donating items to your shops. I was impressed, as you managed to raise a lot of money from the sales of the things I’d donated. Then I decided to start playing the Local Hospice Lottery in support of Sobell House.
Before I retired I worked at the Churchill as a Phlebotomist, and would visit Sobell House to take blood from patients. I was so impressed by the place, everyone was so kind and helpful.
A few friends have since been cared for by Sobell House, and you hear such good things about the care. They were very well looked after and made to feel comfortable, so it’s really nice to be able to support the work by playing the lottery.
When I got the call to say that I’d won, I was just amazed! To think that I of all people should win. We haven’t decided how to spend the winnings yet, but are planning on buying a new sofa and it’s a great help to know it’s there if I need it. I would definitely recommend playing the Local Hospice Lottery in support of Sobell House to others.

Here are the answers to some common questions we receive.
Tell me more about the prize funds
Every week there is the chance to win;
- £2,000 prize
- £1,000 rollover prize*
- £100 prize
- 150 £10 consolation prizes
*If the £1,000 prize is not won, it rolls over each week to a maximum of £25,000!! (Excluding Super Draw weeks, where the £1,000 prize will always remain £1,000.)
In addition we have two Super Draws a year. As well as offering the above prizes, the Super Draws also have an additional guaranteed top prize of a whopping £10,000!!
The odds of winning our £2,000 prize are 3 times better than winning a prize of similar value in the National Lottery’s Lotto Draw. So each and every week not only do our players know that their membership is making a real difference to supporting people at the hospice of their choice, they also have a fantastic chance of winning.
How do I find out if I’ve won?
Every week (on a Friday, unless it happens to be a bank holiday, in which case the draw will take place on the Thursday before) the lucky winners are randomly selected by our Lottery System. You don’t need to worry about checking your numbers as winning cheques are sent out automatically by post, within days of the draw taking place. If you win a prize of £1,000 or more – we’ll phone you first to give you the good news and check that the address we hold for you is still correct. You can also check to see whether you’ve won a prize online.
How much of my entry fee helps Sobell House?
For every £1 entry into the weekly draw, Local Hospice Lottery will pass between 50% and 80% to the hospice that person is playing in support of. This varies depending on the number of people we have playing for us at any one time. As a comparison, the National Lottery gives 28% of proceeds to good causes and the Health Lottery gives just over 20%.
Sobell House is one of a number of hospices throughout Great Britain who are supported by Local Hospice Lottery and all profits are donated to hospice care. By sharing management costs and overheads, Local Hospice Lottery is able to offer both a larger prize fund to players and provide more money for hospice care.
